What is hypnosis and how does hypnotherapy work?
The practice of promoting healing or positive development in any way, whilst in hypnosis, is known as hypnotherapy. As such, hypnotherapy is a kind of psychotherapy.
In therapy, hypnosis usually involves clients experiencing a sense of deep relaxation with their attention narrowed down, and focused on appropriate suggestions made by the therapist. These suggestions help clients make positive changes within themselves. They will be totally relaxed, but fully in control and aware of what is happening to them and around them.
Hypnosis involves the induction of a trance-like condition, but when in it, the client is actually in an enhanced state of awareness, concentrating entirely on the hypnotist's voice. In this state, the conscious mind is suppressed and the subconscious mind is revealed. During this time, the hypnotherapist works with clients giving them appropriate, positive suggestions, while using techniques that will assist them achieve their goals.
It is generally accepted that all hypnosis is ultimately self-hypnosis. A hypnotist merely helps to facilitate this experience - hypnotherapy is not about being made to do things, in fact it is the opposite, it is about empowerment.
HYPNOSIS IS A POWERFUL HEALING THERAPY, MAKING PROFOUND CHANGES TO YOUR LIFE.
How many sessions will I need
This will be discussed at your initial appointment, which will include an in depth assessment and your chance to explain your problem. It is important to have an assessment before hypnotherapy, to be sure the session is tailor-made to suit your requirements.
What happens during a session?
Firstly, any misconceptions a potential client may have about hypnosis should be dispelled. During hypnosis clients cannot be made to do anything they would not ordinarily do.
The important thing is that clients must want to change some behavioural habit and are highly motivated to do so. They have to want the treatment to work and must establish a good clinical rapport with the therapist in order for it to do so.
